The word “quilted” is derived from the Old French word quilt meaning “to sew with thread.” A quilted sweatshirt has a pattern of quilting stitches, often in contrasting colors. These stitches are made by stitching two or more parallel rows of fabrics of the same color along the length of the jersey in gaps above and below each other. The modern version of this type of quilting sweatshirts consists primarily of cotton. According to the United States Bureau for Labor Statistics, it is one of the “most common types” of men’s and women’s clothing that consumers can purchase in America.
